Culture
Lille’s Town Hall belfry has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005. It can be visited free of charge and offers a viewing platform; the distinctive belfry is 104 metres high and provides panoramic views of Lille and the surrounding area. After an initial flight of stairs, visitors can reach the viewing platform of Lille’s Town Hall belfry by lift or continue on foot. Lille Town Hall and its belfry can be reached via Métro line 2, at the Mairie de Lille stop.
The Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse is located in a hospital founded by Jeanne de Flandre in 1237. Since 1962, it has housed an extensive collection of paintings, tapestries, wood carvings, furniture and regional faience.
The Palais des Beaux-Arts displays French and European paintings as well as sculptures. It also contains relief maps of regional towns that Vauban fortified in the 17th century.
The “Lille, City of Art and History” service offers events for tourists throughout the year and also conducts guided tours of Lille’s heritage all year round, including in Vieux-Lille.
Nature and Activities
Construction of the Citadel of Lille began in 1667 and lasted three years. The Parc de la Citadelle is a defining historical, natural and sporting site in Lille. Exhibitions line the walk through the citadel and its park.
The Zoo de Lille is located at the foot of the walls of the Vauban citadel, covers three hectares and presents 77 animal species in six themed areas.
In Vieux-Lille, there is a 7-kilometre walking route with seven sights and nine possible exercises.
Events
The Braderie de Lille takes place almost every year on the first weekend of September. During the Braderie de Lille, the streets of Lille are transformed for two days into a huge open-air market where visitors can browse and trade.
