Nature

Culture and History
Crespin Abbey was founded around 670, and its first abbey church was built around 673. The parts visible today include the abbot’s house, the entrance gate to the farmyard, the large mill and the outbuildings. Parts of the former abbey – including the abbot’s palace, the mill buildings, the entrance portal and five pillars – have been listed as historic monuments by a decree dated 26 December 1990.
The Moulin de Crespin was a former local mill belonging to the industrial heritage, where flour was produced. It was powered by the water of the Hogneau. Its operation ended in 1965; following a fire on Christmas night 1997, only a small part, including the silo, remains.
The church of Crespin contains three altarpieces from the Abbey of Saint-Jean de Valenciennes. The Chapelle Saint-Roch was built by residents in 1849 and inaugurated in 1853. Following a severe cholera epidemic, the population went to the chapel to pray. The Saint-Roch festival takes place on 16 August.
Trails and Festivals
The “Alexandre le Géant” hiking trail in Crespin is 8.5 km long and has a 4 km short variant. It combines nature, the abbey heritage and urban landscapes and uses part of the GR 122. The circular trail starts at Crespin Town Hall and is signposted with yellow PR markings.
The “Marche d’Alexandre le Géant” takes place every year on the third Sunday in September. The local hiking club organizes several routes, accompanied by a procession featuring the giant and his companions. The Totemus route in Crespin is an interactive treasure hunt through the town’s local cultural heritage.
Culinary Delights
The Brasserie d’Amblise in Crespin comprises a restaurant, a bar and a boutique. Amblise beers can be tasted there: four varieties are served on tap, and the entire product range is available in bottles. The menu includes northern French dishes such as carbonade flamande, Welsh à la Bougre d’Amblise and flamiche au Maroilles.
