Culture and History

The Filature Ramond was founded in 1841; its functioning machinery is listed in the supplementary register of historic monuments. The Église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was built in 1668 on the foundations of an 11th-century chapel. Inside, there are striking stained-glass windows, altarpieces signed by Greschny and a monumental organ.

The history of the town also includes the Pierre Plantée Statue-Menhir, which is classified as a historic monument. Lacaune is also home to the Mémorial de la déportation des juifs et des victimes du nazisme. On 13 January 1942, Lacaune was selected by the prefect of Tarn as a place for the compulsory residence of foreign Jews.

A museum in Lacaune offers around fifteen rooms depicting local everyday life. These include a schoolroom from 1880, as well as exhibitions on the wild child and the thermal baths.

Trails and Landscapes

The Circuit des fontaines is a 5 km circular route that takes around an hour and allows visitors to freely explore Lacaune’s cultural heritage. Those looking for a longer route through the landscape can take Circuit No. 8 – Trail du Montalet, a 17.5 km trail leading from the centre of Lacaune to the summit of Montalet at an altitude of 1,259 m.

The Tunnel du Petit Train is open from 1 May to 14 October; the Voie Verte can be accessed all year round. The Monts de Lacaune offer streams, waterways and lakes suitable for fishing, water sports and hiking. Access to Le Gijou is also free; a fishing licence is required for fishing.

Enjoyment and Relaxation

A visit to Salaisons Oberti ends with a tasting of Lacaune PGI ham and other specialities in the shop.

The Espace des Sources Chaudes is supplied by a naturally warm spring. Its facilities include a leisure and sports pool open all year round, a relaxation area and a fitness room.
