The history of the Abbaye Saint-Michel in Gaillac began in the 10th century: Benedictine monks founded it on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa. The present abbey church was built between the late 12th century and the last quarter of the 13th century.
Culture
The Place du Griffoul is Gaillac’s main market square. Brick arcades line the square; they were intended to protect market visitors and traders. At the Quai Saint-Jacques, brick quays and a navigation house dating from 1882 are reminders of Gaillac’s former port.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts has been awarded the Musée de France designation. It is located in the Château de Foucaud and presents art collections from the 19th and 20th centuries. Another collection is displayed at the Musée d’histoire naturelle Philadelphe Thomas: zoological, palaeontological, geological, botanical and archaeological holdings are presented there in the atmosphere of a cabinet of curiosities.
Nature
The Parc Foucaud is Gaillac’s most important wooded park area. It combines a French garden with an Italian garden laid out on descending terraces leading to the Tarn. Above Gaillac, the Oenorando® route “Sur le chemin de Pompirac” also follows numerous wooded paths over easily accessible hills.
Wine
The Maison des Vins de Gaillac is located on the banks of the Tarn within the Abbaye Saint-Michel. Wine-tasting courses are offered there, teaching the basics of oenology, aromas and the perception of flavours. The courses also include a tasting of five wines from Gaillac.
Surroundings
The historic site of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Candeil and the Église Saint-Eugène de Vieux are located in the vicinity of Gaillac. The wider region is home to the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, the Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile, the Jardins du Palais de la Berbie, the Jardin National, the Roc d’Anglars and Al Pech.
