Culture and History
Cordes-sur-Ciel was founded in 1222 by Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse. The Maison du Grand Fauconnier was built in the first half of the 14th century and is characteristic of southern Rayonnant Gothic. It now houses the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Cordes (MAMC).
The Musée Charles Portal presents the history of the Cordaise region in seven rooms, from prehistoric times to the 19th century. It bears the designation “Musée de France” and is housed in a medieval building classified as a “Monument Historique”.
In Cordes-sur-Ciel, visitors can enter the studios of artists and craftspeople. Among other materials, they work with clay, leather, wood, wool and oil pigments.
The Musée des Arts du Sucre et du Chocolat – Yves Thuriès is located in the Maison Prunet, an authentic medieval building, and displays sculptures made of sugar and chocolate.
Landscape and Garden
The town walls of Cordes-sur-Ciel offer views over the Cérou valley. The Sentier du causse autour de Cordes-sur-Ciel is a 13 km moderately difficult hiking route with a duration of 3 hours and an elevation gain of 120 m; it offers panoramic views of Cordes-sur-Ciel at several points.
The Jardin des Paradis is a contemporary, pleasure-oriented garden inspired by medieval and oriental traditions. It was created on the former fortified terraces of the lower town of Cordes-sur-Ciel and has been awarded the designation “Jardin remarquable”.
Culinary Delights
Visitors can try Croquants de Cordes, a local speciality made from flour, egg whites, sugar and almonds. In the workshop of the Musée des Arts du Sucre et du Chocolat – Yves Thuriès, handmade biscuits can be produced, including Croquants de Cordes.
At the entrance to the Jardin des Paradis, there are local drinks, handcrafted syrups, organically certified ice cream and sorbets, as well as food available on site.
Getting Around
Cordes-sur-Ciel can be discovered on the Occitanie Rail Tour along the Bastide line from Toulouse to Figeac.
