Culture and History
The Church of Saint-Julien de Sazos is a Romanesque church with a historiated tympanum and capitals depicting mythological animals. Inside, there are 16th-century wall paintings of Adam and Eve and Saint George; they were uncovered during the 1999 restoration. The municipality opens the church on Wednesday afternoons; guided tours for groups and individuals are available on request.
Notre-Dame des Bergers on the hill was formerly a gathering place for shepherds at the beginning and end of transhumance. During a visit to the Moulin de Sazos, the mill is demonstrated in operation.
Trails and Nature
The “Circuit VTT n°2 – Vallée de Luz – Le bassin de Luz” is an easy 2-hour-45-minute, 13.8 km loop that passes through Sazos. The L’Agnouède hike reaches the village of Sazos after crossing the Sassis footbridge and leads through the vegetation of L’Agnouède to the large Mensongé waterfall.
The “Circuit des trois villages” loop starts and ends at the Place de la mairie in Sazos. It can be walked when free of snow or ice, dogs are allowed on a leash, and the route passes the restored mills of Sazos.
Local Produce
The Ferme des Cascades in Sazos is located on the GR 10 and offers direct sales of farm produce. It makes Tommes as well as various goat’s milk cheeses, including fresh cheese, soft cheese, feuilletés, Fromchos and “Fondue Pyrénéenne”.
By reservation, the Ferme des Cascades offers educational visits during which visitors accompany the shepherds on the summer pastures. The farm includes terraced permaculture gardens and a sheepfold with goats, sheep and a cow named Pirouette. The site also features the “Caprifolia” trail with wild plants along the banks of the Bernazaou.
Transport
The SALIGOS – Passerelle stop is served by the LOURDES – VALLEES routes and is approximately a 22-minute walk, or 1,842 m, from the Ferme des Cascades.
