Culture and History

The present-day parish church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption in Bordères-Louron was commissioned in 1861 and completed in 1875. In Ilhan stands the Église d’Ilhan, a small Romanesque church with a Gothic side building and entrance portal added in the 16th century. Overlapping wall paintings from the 13th and 16th centuries decorate the building.

Only a few remains of the polygonal outer wall and part of the chapel of Château de Bordères-Louron survive above ground. The château was damaged by a fire on 14 January 1740, which destroyed its roof. It was built on a rise of earth northwest of the present-day village. The fortress of Château de Bordères-Louron was probably built at the end of the 13th century by Don Roger d’Espagne, the first ruler of the Louron Valley.

A forest path through the La Moulette district offers views of the former terraced gardens laid out on the hillside. The hike to Lac de Bordères, also known as Lac de Bareilles, is described as a very easy family hike covering 2 kilometres, with 250 metres of elevation gain and a walking time of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

For access to the Réserve naturelle régionale du Massif du Montious, Lannemezan is named as the nearest TER railway station; the nearest bus stations are in Saint-Lary-Soulan or Bagnères-de-Luchon.

Nature

Lac de Bordères, also known as Lac de Bareilles, lies in the heavily forested Bareilles Valley at an elevation of approximately 1,760 metres and is fed by an underground spring.

The Réserve naturelle régionale du Massif du Montious features historical continuity, abundant deadwood and numerous microhabitats characteristic of a mature forest structure. Remarkable plants such as Arabette de Soyer and Cystoperis des montagnes have been recorded in the grasslands and rock outcrops; the lake is also home to Potamot à feuilles de graminées, part of the area’s sensitive flora.

Two-thirds of the protected area is forested, and it also includes large open areas where wetlands, a lake, grasslands and rock outcrops occur together in a mosaic.
