Culture and History

Aspin-en-Lavedan reveals its history through tangible traces in its buildings and archaeological remains. The church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built from exposed stone. A 12th-century chrismon is displayed inside. The present-day church was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries; little remains of the Romanesque predecessor church.

North of Aspin-en-Lavedan, the foundations of the Saint-Georges chapel can be found on a hill; it is also called sen Yorli or Yorly. The chapel hill was already inhabited in protohistoric times; traces of a forge and a settlement made from perishable materials, probably dating from the Iron Age, were found there. Another historical connection is the old quarry near Aspin: it supplied black marble veined with spar, known as “marbre d’Aspin”, which was mentioned in the 1858 Joanne guidebook.

Getting Around

The “Patrimoine secret de Batsurguère” route leads uphill from Pont Neuf to the village of Aspin-en-Lavedan. The church is less than a 20-minute walk from the “Lugagnan – Pont Neuf” bus stop.

Cycling

Circuit no. 13, “Lourdes – Vallée de Batsurguère”, is a difficult 19.5 km mountain-bike loop with 548 metres of ascent and a stated duration of 2 hours 30 minutes. The “Lourdes – Vallée de Batsurguère” mountain-bike circuit passes through Aspin-en-Lavedan, entering the village at its outskirts and then continuing towards Viger.

Aspin-en-Lavedan is one of the municipalities within the ZNIEFF “Massifs calcaires de l'Estibète, du Granquet et du Pibeste, forêt de Très Crouts, vallée du Bergons et crêtes”.
