Culture and History

The Église Saint-André is a Neo-Romanesque church in the shape of a Latin cross and was completed in 1889. In the village centre, there is also the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Piétà, dating from the late 18th century. The Église Saint-Pé in the hamlet of Léoudary is probably of Romanesque origin.

The Château de Montespan was built in the 13th century on a hill overlooking the Garonne Valley, the Arbas Massif and the village. Its remains were listed as a historic monument by decree of 18 November 1926. Montespan also has a medieval mill whose three millstones continued to grind flour until the Second World War. The mill is privately owned and can be visited by appointment.

A cave from the Magdalenian period in Montespan was discovered in 1922 by Norbert Casteret. An underground river flows through the cave for a length of 1,200 metres. For reasons of conservation and safety, the cave is closed to the public.

Landscape

The elevated position of the Château de Montespan above the Garonne Valley, the Arbas Massif and the village is one of the village’s prominent geographical features. At the Château, there are information panels and object labels, two reading panels about the Pyrenees, and an orientation panel.

Visiting

The Château de Montespan is open for free visits all year round. The Église Saint-André can also be visited free of charge all year round from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Village Life

The Lavoir Saint-André has a hipped roof supported by 12 wooden pillars. In Montespan, cheese is sold directly under the name “Le Montespan”, along with meat and honey. The village festival takes place on the third weekend of September.
