Culture and history

The bridge of the Gardouch lock is one of the few surviving bridges from the 18th century and has a monumental appearance. The Gardouch lock keeper’s house was rebuilt in the 1840s to 1850s as a typical mid-19th-century lock keeper’s house and is protected as a historic monument. The Gardouch lock, its bridge and the lock keeper’s house on the Canal du Midi were placed under protection by decree of 24 April 1998.

In the Church of Saint-Martin in Gardouch, the choir faces west and the entrance faces east. La Minoterie is a former mill on the Canal du Midi in Gardouch. The Café des Minotiers at La Minoterie regularly hosts amateur and professional performances. The café at La Minoterie welcomes guests on its terrace for drinks and tastings of local products.

The Moulin de l’Herqule was built in 1850 on a hilltop and overlooks the Lauragais countryside. It retains its original millstones and is the only surviving example of the former mills along the ridge. The Moulin de l’Herqule was restored in the 20th century; today, it is a prominent landmark for visitors.

A guided tour of the Négra and Gardouch locks covers the construction of the Canal du Midi under Louis XIV, transport by mail barges, trade, the improvements made by the Marquis de Vauban and the canal’s UNESCO status.

Getting around

The circular route “En passant par les Agals” starts in front of Gardouch Town Hall. It is an easy 7.1 km hiking route lasting approximately three hours and runs along the Canal du Midi near the Laval lock.

The Port des Agals near Gardouch on the Canal du Midi is suitable for a walk along the canal. The Canal du Midi at Gardouch also offers a long towpath for cyclists and pedestrians, connecting Toulouse with the Mediterranean and extending for 242 km.

Various boat tours are offered on the Canal du Midi near Gardouch, ranging from a two-hour electric boat trip to renting a houseboat without a licence for one week.

The former lock keeper’s house at Gardouch harbour offers food and drinks from April to September.
