Saint-Puy: Vacation Apartments and Holiday Homes
The historic village of Saint-Puy combines features of the medieval settlement types known as sauveté, castelnau and bastide. Anyone considering Saint-Puy as a destination may wish to rent a vacation apartment.
Culture and History
The Vieille Tour, also known as the Tour de la rue Orbe, is a tower built in the Middle Ages within the grid of the former bastide of Saint-Puy. Until the founding of the bastide of Fleurance in 1274, Saint-Puy was the capital of the County of Gaure.
The ecclesiastical center and the castelnau of Saint-Puy are connected by three parallel streets. As a result, this part of the village has the appearance of a bastide. The market hall of Saint-Puy connects the ecclesiastical center, which developed around the church, with the grid of the former bastide.
The market hall dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Its metal structure is very well preserved and so rare in the region that it deserves special mention.
History is also evident in individual buildings outside the village center. The Château de Monluc stands on the remains of a 13th-century castle, which in turn was built on the ruins of a Gallic oppidum dating from the Neolithic period. For more than a thousand years, the Château de Monluc has been inseparably connected with the vineyards growing there.
The Cabane de vigne of Saint-Puy dates from the 1850s and has been preserved by the municipality. It is one of the last surviving vineyard huts in this area.
Landscape
The Moulin de Montfaucon is a popular stop for walkers, offering views of the Gèle Valley and, in clear weather, as far as the Pyrenees on the horizon. The Hôpital de Morlan stands on a promontory southwest of Saint-Puy and offers a panorama over the Gèle Valley.
The Lavoir de Calamet lies away from Saint-Puy in the hamlet of Calamet, in a hollow in the valley. It forms part of a circular route of more than 2 km around Saint-Puy and its surroundings. Outdoor activities in the municipality of Saint-Puy include walking and hiking.
Circular Routes and Sightseeing
The Circuit de Montfaucon is a 2.3 km circular route through Saint-Puy's historical heritage. In the historic village of Saint-Puy, individual visits can be undertaken independently at any time; guided group visits are available on request.
