Culture and History
The Château de Lavardens has nine centuries of history, from its origins as a medieval fortress to its transformation into a pleasure residence in the 17th century.
The lower section dates from the 13th century and forms the foundation of the new château, which was rebuilt in 1620.
The village’s historic buildings also include the Church of Saint Michael. Its bell tower was classified as a historic monument in 1960. Dating from its rebuilding at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, the church retains a Flamboyant Gothic portal and a south chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Landscape and Trails
The GR de Pays CÅ“ur de Gascogne passes through Lavardens; the 165-km long long-distance trail connects the GR65 with the GR653.
A shorter route is the Circuit du Château de Lavardens loop trail: the 10-km hike starts in Lavardens and offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills, the château and the Gers countryside.
There is a large car park in front of the Château de Lavardens, where parking is easy. Regional buses on the Auch–Condom route serve the surrounding villages; there is a stop in Jegun, 5 km from Lavardens.
Local Life and Art
In July and August, Lavardens’ traditional night markets bring together local artisans and producers offering fresh products and live concerts.
The Château de Lavardens houses an art centre that is open all year round. Guided tours of Lavardens are offered throughout the year according to the programme of the Pays d’art et d’histoire Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne.
