Culture and History
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Mirepoix houses a painting of John the Baptist in an 18th-century frame that Louis XV gave to the Lord of Batz. The painting is listed as a “Monument historique”. The choir of the present-day church stands on the site of a tower belonging to the town’s former fortifications; the church is mentioned in medieval texts from the 13th century.
The crosses along the roads and paths of Mirepoix are also among the town’s traditional landmarks. They recall the religious processions held every spring, during which parishioners and priests prayed for a good harvest that year.
The Château de Batz dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and was acquired by the Batz family in 1761. The large building is made of dressed stone and features a remarkable stone staircase and a beautiful entrance door. The name Mirepoix is “mirepech” in Occitan and derives from “mire” for “to look” and “pech” for “summit”.
Wine and Regional Character
Mirepoix lies within the Haut Armagnac appellation area, where the wine-growing tradition continues.

The walking route (PR) starting at Mirepoix Town Hall is 9.2 km long and takes just under three hours. In the area around Mirepoix, the hiking route leads to the hamlet of Tourrens, two windmills, two chapels, a fountain and the restored Couderla Cross.
The “Mirepoix, par le hameau de Tourrens” route passes through cultivated plains and by châteaux, chapels and mills.
