The Collégiale Saint-Pierre in La Romieu is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle en France”.

Culture and townscape

The Tour dite du Cardinal, a remnant of the former palace in La Romieu, has been listed as a Monument historique since 1928. Numerous stone cat sculptures by Maurice Serreau can be seen in the town centre – on windows, doors, bull’s-eye windows and some house entrances. The village’s townscape is also characterised by light-coloured stone façades and an arcaded square, both typical of the region.

The square tower of the collegiate complex houses a 900-kilogram bell, one of the oldest in the Gers; the year 1450 is indicated next to it. The Collégiale Saint-Pierre offers self-guided visits lasting approximately 45 minutes to one hour. These include the cloister, the church, the sacristy with its wall paintings, the five-step access to the octagonal tower, the first floor of the bell tower and the chemin de ronde.

Routes and sightseeing

La Romieu lies on the GR 65, the Voie du Puy-en-Velay, and is part of the 35-kilometre route between Lectoure and Condom. This route is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle en France”, which has been listed since 1998. La Romieu is also the endpoint of the GR 652 route from Rocamadour.

The 8-kilometre Sentier karstique de La Romieu–Gazaupouy starts at the Collégiale Saint-Pierre in La Romieu. La Romieu has nine signposted circular routes for walking or short hikes (PR). Electrically assisted bicycles can be rented to explore the town and the surrounding villages.

Nature

At the foot of La Romieu are the Jardins de Coursiana, a 6-hectare botanical park awarded the Jardin Remarquable distinction. The Coursiana complex also includes the Arboretum de Coursiana, with nearly 700 species of trees and shrubs.

Seasonal events

A rose market is held in La Romieu every year on the penultimate Sunday in May. There are also nurseries specialising in roses and rose bushes. For the past 17 years, the Fête des Plantes et de l’Artisanat has been held every year on 8 May at the Jardins de Coursiana, bringing together craftspeople, nurseries and visitors.
