Montrozier between Aveyron, Causse Comtal and Gallo-Roman heritage

Montrozier extends on both sides of the Aveyron River. The RN88 runs through the town, while the rural landscapes and Causse Comtal reveal different facets of the surrounding area. Here, between the river landscape, limestone plateau and archaeological sites, nature experiences combine with Gallo-Roman history.

Nature and activities

The rural landscapes of Montrozier are suitable for walking, hiking, trail running, mountain biking, enduro riding and fishing. The Causse Comtal area adds hiking, mountain biking and horse riding to this selection. This brings together various forms of exercise: peaceful paths, endurance activities and tours where the terrain itself takes on greater importance.

Natura 2000 sites are located on the northern limestone plateau of Causse Comtal. They are home to flora that is rich in orchids and plants typical of dry grasslands. Those who wish to experience the landscape not only through sport but also through its plant life will find another thematic perspective in the same natural area. The activities mentioned can be distinguished according to landscape and type of movement, without conflating the different characteristics of Aveyron and Causse Comtal.

Culture and history

A protected structure in Montrozier is the Pont sur l’Aveyron. It has been protected as a Monument historique since 19 April 1944 through official listing. The bridge is therefore as much a part of the townscape as the town’s natural connection with the Aveyron River.

The Espace archéologique départemental de Montrozier is a publicly accessible exhibition venue dedicated to discovering the archaeological heritage of the Aveyron département. It offers activities introducing visitors to excavations and cave art, as well as to the production of prehistoric jewellery and ceramics and Gallo-Roman objects. The exhibition and activities thus provide different ways of engaging with the finds and periods associated with Montrozier.

The exhibition at the Espace archéologique départemental de Montrozier explains Roquemissou through archaeological research and new technologies. Roquemissou was inhabited by humans from around 12,000 BC to 2,000 BC. Its chronology therefore extends from earlier settlement to a significantly later prehistoric phase.

The Villa d’Argentelle is considered the largest and most luxurious Gallo-Roman complex in the Aveyron département. The Villa gallo-romaine d'Argentelle in Montrozier was inhabited from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD. Archaeological finds from the Villa d’Argentelle are displayed at the Espace archéologique départemental. In this way, finds from the villa and explanations of Roquemissou can be encountered at the same exhibition venue, without equating their different historical periods.

Further experiences

In Gages, in the municipality of Montrozier, Le Jardin des Bêtes includes an animal park and an amusement park. Both areas can be accessed with a single admission ticket. The Parc animalier Le Saint Hubert is another attraction in Montrozier.
