Culture and history
In the heart of the village of Gemmelaincourt stands the Église Saint-Maur, a hall church made of local sandstone and built in the 19th century. It was rebuilt in 1876 over the remains of an earlier Romanesque structure.
The Église Saint-Maur preserves a Romanesque narthex that is offset from the nave. It contrasts with the Flamboyant Gothic style used for the choir and side aisles. The church is open to the public daily and is considered an important cultural and historical landmark and landscape feature in this rural area.
The historical character of the village also includes the Château de Gemmelaincourt, an 18th-century château. Gemmelaincourt also has a calvary that forms part of the village’s religious heritage. The Château de Bassompierre remains privately owned.
I am planning to rent a holiday apartment in Gemmelaincourt; the Église Saint-Maur and the Château de Gemmelaincourt are on my wishlist.
Nature
The ZNIEFF type 2 protected area “Vergers de Mirecourt” also encompasses the municipality of Gemmelaincourt. In the regional context of this ZNIEFF, amphibians, reptiles, birds, butterflies, beetles, ferns, flowering plants and orthopterans are listed as groups of interest.
Another aspect of the village is the Haras de Castille, a horse-breeding operation in a green setting in Gemmelaincourt.
Cuisine
Le Jardin des Lys is a manor house built towards the end of the 19th century on the site of two former farms, with a park and agricultural outbuildings. In Gemmelaincourt, Le Jardin des Lys offers cooking classes with meals.
