Culture

The surviving parts of Sainte-Barbe Church include the south tower, which houses the bell tower, and the portal dating from the construction phase of the early 16th century. The bell tower is listed in the inventory of historic monuments. At the same time, it served as a useful observation point for defending access to Metz.

The building’s history also includes destruction and reconstruction: after the original church was destroyed, a smaller church was rebuilt. Sainte-Barbe Church was destroyed in 1826; a new Sainte-Barbe Church was rebuilt between 1827 and 1828.

Human settlement in Sainte-Barbe can be traced back to the Mousterian more than 30,000 years ago. A Roman road towards Les Étangs ran south of Sainte-Barbe. Gallo-Roman villas and numerous small agricultural buildings were also located here.

Landscape and trails

The highest point in Sainte-Barbe is located in the Bois de Cheuby at an elevation of 316 metres. The Boucle de Glatigny - Retonfey - Sainte-Barbe connects Glatigny, Retonfey and Sainte-Barbe and runs between plateaus and grass-covered valleys.
