Culture and History

The choir of the Church of Saint-Jean Baptiste dates from the 10th century and features pre-Romanesque design. A bell from this church dating from 1657 is listed as a Historic Monument. In 1370, a chapel dedicated to Saint John was commissioned as part of the keep complex.

The Chapel of Saint-Sébastien also preserves older structural elements: its choir dates from the 14th century, while the single-nave body was built in the 18th century. The fortifications surrounding the new Cellera of Saint-Jean-Pla-de-Corts date from the 12th century. The Château of Saint-Jean-Pla-de-Corts served as a summer residence for the kings of Majorca.

The local craft tradition includes the Briqueterie Sainte-Marcelle. It is now the last active brickworks producing the Cayrous used for the region's historic buildings. The Briqueterie Sainte-Marcelle's brickmaking expertise dates back to 1735 and has been recognised as part of France's intangible cultural heritage. A visit showcases every stage of production, from the raw clay mixture to the finished terracotta products.
