Montalba-Le-Château: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

In the upper part of Montalba-le-Château, a polygonal fortification wall encloses the settlement; it probably dates from the 12th century. The castle includes a keep probably dating from the 14th century, while the other buildings were constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Culture and history

The Church of Notre Dame de l’Assomption probably dates from the 13th century, although it may be somewhat older. It has a polygonal apse and an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The castle chapel was built at the same time as the castle in the 12th century.

Three complete Balendras and several fragmentary remains have been preserved in Montalba-le-Château. Balendras are vaulted structures that supported a small terrace and a staircase and provided access to a goat shed at a lower level. The Moulins de Montalba are the remains of two watermills from the 18th century.

The Ropidera loop passes through granite chaos and a garrigue landscape with huts and dry-stone terraces that bear witness to former pastoral and viticultural activities. On the descent, after visiting Montalba-le-Château, the Ropidera loop passes along the village before continuing to Rodès.

The peaks of Puig Pedrós, Serrat dels Mallols, Le Néret and Piló d'en Gil are located in the immediate vicinity of Montalba-le-Château. The seasonal Mediterranean ponds of Montalba-le-Château are designated as a Natura 2000 site.
