Nature

Lac de Saint-Andéol covers 12 hectares and is located in an ancient volcanic crater within the municipality of Marchastel. The wetlands associated with Lac de Saint-Andéol provide a habitat for wetland species such as the Eurasian curlew (Numenius arquata) and the round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia).

Trails

The Petite randonnée (PR) trail from Marchastel is 5 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. It follows paths to the Bès and Rieutort before returning to the village.

To the east of the village, Marchastel Bridge, also known as Bukinkan Bridge, spans the Bès River. It was built in the 16th century and is described as a noteworthy site for hikers.

Culture and History

The Oculus at Roc des Loups is a vertically positioned stone orientation and interpretation panel. It stands 100 m from the Way of St. James; surrounding peaks, villages, forests, peat bogs and former volcanoes are depicted along its edge.

The minor road from Marchastel Bridge via Rieutort to Malbouzon follows the route of the old Roman road from Toulouse to Lyon. Marchastel is one of the municipalities in Aubrac with the largest number of burons.

The Church of Sainte-Croix-et-Saint-Pierre features a simple Romanesque style on its façade, a granite portal on the south side and a bell gable on the west façade. The church interior comprises a single-nave barrel-vaulted nave, two square side chapels, a wooden and gilded altarpiece, and a baptismal font topped with a cross. The church can be visited freely and individually at any time; the average visit lasts 30 minutes.

Buron de Born in Marchastel has a terrace overlooking Lac de Born. It serves traditional cuisine featuring cured meats, aligot, retortillat and meat from Aubrac.
