The Lido de Thau is a 12-kilometre-long dune belt that separates the Thau Lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea; it is designated as a Natura 2000 site and protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral.

Nature and Trails

The Lido offers sandy beaches on the Mediterranean side and wilder, ecologically valuable landscapes along the Thau Lagoon on the other. The Voie verte du Lido runs along the beaches; directly behind the Port des Quilles, it begins with a 1-kilometre-long seafront promenade.

The Chemin du Phare Saint-Clair circular route runs along the sea and past the Phare Saint-Clair. Along the way, it offers views of the sea and the harbour.

Regional liO trains offer one way to visit Sète; the town centre and the Halles are a 20-minute walk from the railway station.

Culture

The Théâtre municipal Molière in Sète is listed in its entirety as a historic monument; the listing was made by decree dated 26 September 2003. The Musée Paul Valéry is located on the slopes of Mont Saint-Clair, on a terrace above the Cimetière marin and the Mediterranean Sea, and contains approximately 7,200 works. The Espace Georges Brassens presents documents, photographs and manuscripts; there is also an audio-guided tour about the musician’s life.

The Phare Saint-Louis was built around 1680, destroyed by German mines in 1944 and rebuilt in 1948. Today, it is open to the public. Visitors can climb 126 steps to enjoy a 360-degree view over the commercial harbour, the marina and the old town.

Theatre and History

The Théâtre de la Mer is located in the former Fort Saint-Pierre, which was built on Vauban’s orders to defend the harbour and converted into a theatre from 1959; it opened its doors in 1960. The theatre has an amphitheatre layout on seven platforms overlooking the sea and a summer events programme.

Maritime Life

Escale à Sète is a biennial maritime festival featuring a parade of large sailing ships, international villages, sea-shanty concerts and activities for the whole family.

The Criée de Sète is an active fish market where trawlers land Mediterranean catches, which are sold at auctions to professional buyers. At certain times of the year, guided tours of the Criée are offered, allowing visitors to learn about the fish market’s operations and the daily lives of Sète’s fishermen.
