Culture and History

Bouzigues became one of the cradles of shellfish farming on the Étang de Thau: in 1925, Antoine Louis Tudesq and other residents developed the “Pyramid” oyster-farming technique. Oyster and mussel farming in the Étang de Thau began around 1907–1908 and became increasingly important after the Second World War.

The Musée de l’Étang de Thau introduces visitors to the work of shellfish farmers and fishermen. It opened on 21 October 1991 and is recognised as a “Musée de France”.

The Église Saint-Jacques le Majeur was built in the 14th and 15th centuries, remodelled in the 17th century, and preserves both Gothic and Baroque elements. The high altar ensemble is listed as a Monument historique.

Water and Nature

The Port de Bouzigues is the first port of call of the Canal du Midi on the Étang de Thau. Guided boat trips between the oyster beds depart from the Port de Bouzigues.

Plage de la Trémie is equipped with an access mat for people with reduced mobility. At Plage de la Pyramide, children can observe the lagoon’s wildlife in sheltered waters.

The nature activity “Edmond le poisson”, offered by the CPIE, takes participants into the lagoon and along the coast with a net and bucket in search of a missing fish; the underwater seagrass meadows are also included. The meeting point is in front of the Musée de l’Étang de Thau on Quai du Port in 34140 Bouzigues.

Activities

Local oyster farms in Bouzigues open their mas for tastings and demonstrate shellfish-farming methods, including attaching young shellfish, raising them on submerged tables, and detaching them from the ropes.

The cycle path around the Étang de Thau passes through Bouzigues and connects the town with Balaruc-le-Vieux and Mèze.

The Yacht Club de Bouzigues offers wingfoiling, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, catamaran sailing and canoeing. The tour of Ferme Zoo de Bouzigues passes through a wooded park and allows children to feed and interact directly with the animals.
