Portiragnes combines natural surroundings, village history and the coast within a small geographical area. The Grande Maïre nature reserve is particularly characteristic: it covers more than 400 hectares between the Canal du Midi and the sea. Grande Maïre is designated as a Zone Naturelle d’Intérêt Faunistique et Floristique and protected as part of the Natura 2000 network.

The village of Portiragnes developed around a 12th-century church. Old lanes with particularly attractive, distinctive doors characterise the historic townscape.
The Musée archéologique Jean Saluste explores the history of human settlement in Portiragnes, which spans 600,000 years. The Canal du Midi is also part of the cultural context of the town: it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996 and connects Portiragnes-Village with Portiragnes-Plage.
Exploring the Canal du Midi
A four-kilometre-long paved cycle path connects the village of Portiragnes with its seaside resort, Portiragnes-Plage. At the Canal du Midi near Portiragnes, there are also opportunities to hire boats and take trips on an excursion boat or rowing boat.
Activities and regional experiences
Azimut Aventures at the Domaine de Roque Haute in Portiragnes is a family adventure park with 18 treetop courses.
The Les Gaillardels ranch offers horseback rides along the Canal du Midi in Portiragnes-Plage all year round. These rides are supervised by a state-qualified equestrian tourism guide.
The Manade du Grand Salan offers a guided tour of a Camargue cattle farm. It includes a trailer ride, a demonstration of cattle sorting and a tasting of beef specialities.
Coast and water
Portiragnes has two adapted public beaches: Plage Ouest has wooden walkways, mats, a shower and sanitary facilities. At Plage Est, there is a Tiralo amphibious beach wheelchair and a suitable lifeguard station.
At Plage du Bosquet, visitors can enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, flyboarding, rides on towed inflatable tubes and banana boats, wakeboarding, water skiing and parasailing.
At Les Arènes in Portiragnes-Plage, equestrian and bull shows as well as Camargue races took place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. in July and August.
