Culture and History

The Church of Notre-Dame de Saturargues was built in the 11th and 12th centuries by monks from the Abbey of Saint-Gilles and is designed in the Romanesque style. It was built from limestone extracted from the quarries of Castries, which gives it an ochre-coloured appearance. Inside, it houses works of art from the 17th and 18th centuries, including gilded wooden sculptures and a bell dated 1777.

The Via Domitia ran through the area of the present-day municipality of Saturargues, specifically in the southern part of its municipal territory. Gallo-Roman remains discovered in the village attest to early settlement or historical use of the site.
