Meynes is a medieval village with a rich historical past. Meynes preserves visible traces of the Templar occupation, including remnants of the fortification walls and two former entrance gates.

History

The “Grand Portail”, also known as the “Portail Est”, is a remnant of former Templar houses.

In the past, Meynes had as many as 13 pottery and brick kilns. Meynes was an important centre of pottery production in the lower Rhône Valley, particularly for products used to store food.

Culture

The parish church of Meynes houses an altar dating from the 5th or 6th century and is decorated with very beautiful paintings.

A Roman funerary cippus bearing the funerary inscription of Rutilia Marcella is set into the wall leading to the courtyard of a house on rue du Four. The funerary cippus was classified as a “Monument historique” by decree of 14 March 1955.

A life-size reconstruction of Lucien Coutaud’s mural “Le Mythe de Proserpine” can be seen on the wall of his birthplace in Meynes.

The “Balade intra muros” tour leads through the streets and alleyways of Meynes and begins in the square next to the Salle des Fêtes.

The Church of Saint-Barthélemy can be reached from the “MEYNES – La Cantilène” bus stop in less than a ten-minute walk.

Nature

Meynes’ rural character is reflected in its vineyards and olive groves, as well as in vegetable and fruit cultivation.
