La Vernarède: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

History

La Vernarède is home to Mines de Portes, a coal-mining complex. The complex comprises a mine, a mechanical engineering works and a railway line. The double self-acting inclined plane of Mines de Portes was built in 1858 and 1859 to transport coal away from La Vernarède.

The black marble altar of the Eglise Saint Jean de La Vernarède was registered as a historic monument on 5 June 2014. For safety reasons, the municipality issued an order on 20 June 2018 prohibiting public access to the Eglise Saint Jean.

Nature

La Vernarède lies partly within the Hautes Vallées de la Cèze et du Luech Natura 2000 site, a special area of conservation (SAC) with the identifier FR 9101364.

Hiking

The Le long du Luech et de l'Homol route passes through La Vernarède. It is a moderately difficult 53.1 km circular hike lasting four hours, partly runs at higher elevations with panoramic views, and leads through the valleys of the Luech and the Homol.

The Sentier des Gueules Noires is a yellow-marked, 9.5 km-long hiking trail without any particular difficulties. It begins in the village square of La Vernarède and offers information about the history of coal mining as well as panoramic views.

Getting there

La Vernarède can be reached via the CD 906 road from Alès towards Génolhac and Villefort, or by train via Chamborigaud railway station.
