Cendras is part of the Cévennes coal basin. The Benedictine abbey of Cendras was founded in the 10th century on the remains of a Roman villa; the abbey follows a basilica-style layout in an unadorned Romanesque style.

Culture and History

The interior of the abbey church can only be visited in August during the Concerts de l’Abbaye. At the foot of the 10th-century abbey lies the medieval garden on the site of a former garden that has disappeared. It is recognised as an LPO refuge. The medieval garden provides information about medieval uses of medicinal, food, ornamental and craft plants, including plants used for dyeing, weaving and carding.

The Tour du Puech was built in the 14th century. It is part of a chain of signal towers and overlooks the right bank of the Galeizon.

Biosphera is an environmental education and interpretation centre in Cendras dedicated to understanding the development of the relationship between people and nature in the Cévennes valleys. In 2019, Biosphera became the Maison de la réserve de biosphère des Cévennes.

Nature

Cendras is one of the eight municipalities affected by the Vallée du Galeizon Natura 2000 site. The Vallée du Galeizon Natura 2000 site includes 18 species and 16 habitats of Community interest. Native plants growing in Cendras include oak trees, chestnut trees, boxwood and strawberry trees.
