History
Gaja was a fortified castle surrounded by moats, remnants of which are still preserved. The church of Gaja-et-Villedieu contains a baptismal font made of speckled red marble from Caunes-Minervois.
The Domaine de Villemartin is privately owned. The cloister, the adjoining buildings, the park with its structures, and the architectural remains of the Domaine de Villemartin contained within it – with the exception of the château itself – were listed as historic monuments by decree of 22 April 2015. The estate contains reconstructed fragments of a 12th-century cloister and chapel. Around 1830, sculptural elements and columns were brought to the Domaine de Villemartin and rebuilt there according to a slightly modified layout.
Wine
Domaine Saint Roch cultivates Chardonnay vines considered to be the oldest in the Languedoc. It offers sparkling wines – including Blanquette and Crémant – as well as still wines. Teramas Maro offers guided tours of the winery with wine tasting on request.
Landscape
The Boucle de Gaja-et-Villedieu offers a viewpoint overlooking Limoux. The Boucle de Gaja-et-Villedieu follows an unpaved track between the vineyards towards the Garde-Miel forest.
