Culture and history

The church in Coursan was built in the 12th or 13th century; after the bell tower, its choir is one of the oldest parts of the building. The massive tower of Notre-Dame de la Rominguère is 25 metres high and consists of four storeys of different heights. The bell tower of Notre-Dame de la Rominguère was listed by decree of 13 April 1948.

The Pont de Coursan was opened to traffic in 1706. It has four visible arches: one basket-handle arch and three semicircular arches. Openings with triangular icebreakers are located above the piers.

The ferruginous Fontaine de Coursan dates back to a borehole drilled on the square in 1865 to a depth of 150 metres, which reached acidic, alkaline and iron-rich water. Its spring supplies around 40 litres of water per minute at a temperature of 16 Â°C.

Coursan has three original Wallace fountains; the model was created by the sculptor Charles Lebourg.

Local life

Coursan is still predominantly shaped by viticulture, although crop diversification is beginning. The first attempt at winemaking using carbonic maceration was carried out in Coursan in September 1935.

The Marché de Coursan takes place on the first Sunday of each month and brings together various local producers and traders.

Granhota, L'Atelier du Vinaigre, offers guided tours of the ageing cellar throughout the year. There, traditionally produced balsamic vinegars, flavoured vinegars and organic vinegars are made from Languedoc wines.

Nature

The municipality of Coursan is part of the Étang de Capestang Natura 2000 site (FR9112016), a special protection area for birds covering 1,370 ha.
