Culture

The Church of Saint Martin combines several periods: its oldest part dates from the late 11th century, while it also has a central Romanesque bell tower. The church has been classified as a historic monument since 1927.

The Croix-Fromage, a monolithic limestone wayside cross, stands in Omerville’s central square. The Manoir de Mornay-Villarceaux was built in the 16th century. The Croix Quatre Pieds in Omerville illustrates the Christianisation of megaliths by the Church over the centuries.

The name Croix-Fromage is said to refer to round cheeses made on the farm of the Manoir de Mornay-Villarceaux and sold in the square in the 19th century. The Sentier du patrimoine d’Omerville leads to the Croix pattée.

History

Omerville was partly fortified in the Middle Ages; old streets with a circular layout have survived. The former Louvières commandery is located north of Omerville. It was founded by the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem; the land and lordship of Louvières were purchased on 22 July 1212 by the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem from Gauthier de Louvières and his nephew Raoul.
