History
The medieval history of the village has been linked to Saint-Pierre-aux-Monts Abbey and the Priory of Vinetz since the 12th century.
In 1875, a prehistoric site with tools made from worked stone was discovered near the town centre. It indicates that people were already living there more than 5,000 years before our era. Finds in the village and its surroundings also point to settlement during the Gallic and Gallo-Roman periods.
Parish celebrations are held alternately in the church of Saint-Martin-sur-le-Pré and in Saint Antoine Church, each on one of two Sundays.
Nature
Along the Canal Saint-Martin, an avenue of 310 plane trees lines the left bank for approximately two kilometres between Pont Jacquesson and the Saint-Martin siphon.
The Canal Saint-Martin reaches Saint-Martin-sur-le-Pré, where it flows back into the original bed of the Marne.
The Allée des platanes, designated as a classified site, stretches between Pont Jacquesson in Châlons-en-Champagne and Saint-Martin-sur-le-Pré.
Saint-Martin-sur-le-Pré has held the “4 flowers” award since 2005 and also received the gardener’s first prize.
In the town centre, opposite the market hall, lies the Îlot de fraîcheur. Beneath the trees, it invites walkers to cool off during warm or particularly hot periods.
