In the centre of Mareuil-sur-Cher, the Château de Mareuil stands on the banks of the Cher. It was built in the 15th century by the Bans family, who were known at the time as the lords of Mareuil.

In the 17th century, a wing facing north-east was added to the Château de Mareuil; it is now known as the Aile Nord. A painting dated 1716 is kept in the church of Mareuil-sur-Cher. The room with a fireplace and the painted ceiling on the ground floor of the old Château de Mareuil-sur-Cher were placed under heritage protection by a decree dated 8 October 1935.

Culture and History

Beyond the hamlet of Janverie, the Chapelle de Linière can be discovered on a walk. Its architecture is characteristic of the 12th and 13th centuries. The remains reveal a simple building with two square bays.

At the end of the Route de Mesnes, the Château de Mesnes can be glimpsed through the dense vegetation. It dates from the mid-18th century.

The Chemin de mémoire consists of 19 panels installed at the most important locations along the course of the demarcation line on the canalised Cher, including in Mareuil-sur-Cher. The Chemin de mémoire forms part of the route of the Cœur de France à Vélo cycle path.

Nature

La Grosse Pierre is one of the 28 sensitive natural areas presented by the Loir-et-Cher département. The former surface and underground tuff quarries of La Grosse Pierre are closed to the public. The cavities of La Grosse Pierre now serve as a preferred habitat for several bat species.
