Culture
The remains of the Château de Lavardin were placed under protection as a Monument historique by decree dated 21 November 1945.
The Église Saint-Genest was built from 1040 over a period of almost two centuries. It contains exceptional 12th-century frescoes that were covered over during the Renaissance and rediscovered around 1900.
The Musée de Lavardin provides an insight into the rich cultural heritage associated with the château and allows visitors to discover part of the village’s history.
Nature
The ZNIEFF “Coteau de Lavardin et Ravine des Reclusages” encompasses a very steep slope overlooking the Loir valley downstream from Lavardin.
The slopes of this ZNIEFF consist of tuffeau and are predominantly covered by sessile oak forest. In cooler areas, there are localised zones dominated by beech trees.
The caves in the ZNIEFF “Coteau de Lavardin et Ravine des Reclusages” provide nine bat species with a preferred hibernation area.
Getting around
Lavardin can be reached via a Gothic bridge spanning the Loir. The Pont de Lavardin was built at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century.
Lavardin is located on the cycle route of the Way of St James. The cycling loop “De Lavardin à Sasnières par les troglos” leads from Lavardin to the Jardin Remarquable du Plessis Sasnières.
