Rochecorbon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Rochecorbon on the Loire is characterised by striking historic landmarks. One of them is La Lanterne, a square tower built around 1472 to signal the lordly toll station to ships on the Loire. It is the surviving tower of Rochecorbon’s former fortified castle and was included in France’s first list of Monuments historiques in 1840. La Lanterne is privately owned and not open to the public; during the European Heritage Days, it is regularly a stop on the Marche du Patrimoine organised by the municipality.

Culture

The Chapelle Saint-Georges preserves a special architectural witness to the past: its roof structure was installed in 1028 and is the oldest in France to have been recognised using dendrochronology. The chapel was fully classified as a historic monument in 2016.

Guided tours of the Chapelle Saint-Georges take place on Sundays and public holidays from 14:30 to 18:00 between 15 May and 31 October. It can also be visited independently free of charge; the key is available from April to September at the Rochecorbon tourist office.

The cultural character of the town also includes the Jardin du Manoir des Basses Rivières, a garden of heritage significance bearing the “Jardin Remarquable” label. It consists of terraced gardens that open out towards the Loire in front of an 18th-century country manor house.

Nature

Rochecorbon has around 300 hectares of vineyards on steep slopes and is one of the seven municipalities entitled to claim the AOC Vouvray designation.

The Île de la Métairie, formerly called Île de Rochecorbon, lies in the immediate surroundings of Rochecorbon. This natural area on the Loire is characterised by sandy meadows, alluvial forests and riverbanks that partially dry out depending on the season and water level.

Walking Routes

The circular route “L'Histoire dans la rue 4 – De vallons en vignes” is 4.8 km long and runs between vineyards and valleys. Its stops include troglodyte cellars and stables.

The 3.8 km circular route “L'Histoire dans la rue 3 – De Vauvert aux Patys” leads to a Gallic oppidum, Castelroc, AOC Vouvray vineyards, the Loire, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and troglodyte settlements on the hillside.

The Voie de Tours, also known as the Via Turonensis, also passes through Rochecorbon. It runs in 39 stages from Paris to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port through the town and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle.

Experiences

La Rabouilleuse offers boat trips on request throughout the year to explore the Loire and its natural environment. Together with partner sailing clubs, it also organises sailing courses and downstream Loire trips in dinghies; accompaniment by canoe is possible.

Lulu Parc is a shaded open-air amusement park for children of all ages, set in a natural environment in the Val de Loire.

Local Character

The Marché de Rochecorbon takes place every Saturday morning at Place de l’Observaloire. It focuses on local producers and invites visitors to discover and taste their products.

The wine cellars of Rochecorbon invite visitors to explore the cellars and learn more from the winemakers about the wines they produce.
