Villeneuve-l'Archevêque was founded around 1150 by the monks of Saint-Jean-lès-Sens according to a grid plan typical of the Middle Ages. The Église Notre-Dame was placed under protection as a historic monument by decree of 12 July 1886. The church also contains a Burial dating from 1528 from Vauluisant Abbey.

Villeneuve-l'Archevêque is also associated with an event from 1239: Saint Louis received Christ's Crown of Thorns here after purchasing it from the Venetians. The vanished fortifications are marked by promenades lined with ancient lime trees. These promenades were laid out in 1776 on the site of the former ramparts.
