History

Villefargeau was formerly known as Villa Ferreolus and was originally a fief belonging to the County of Auxerre. In 1523, Villefargeau passed to the d'Estampes family, who were barons of La Ferté-Imbault at the time.

The Château de Villefargeau was extensively remodelled in the 19th century. During the Wars of Religion, it housed the nobility of the Auxerrois. The historic village landscape also includes the Lavoir des Bruyères washhouse, which was restored in 2021/2022.

Hiking

For outdoor activity in the area, Villefargeau offers the “La croisée des Bois” hike. It is 7 km long and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The ASCV hiking section organises hikes in Villefargeau on the first and third Thursday, as well as on any fifth Thursday; the meeting point is at 2 p.m. at the sports field.

Local life

The Villefargeau municipal library has books and occasionally hosts exhibitions. The Villefargeau book boxes are free, require no registration and are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Together with the municipality, ASCV organises the community festival with fireworks and a flea market on the first weekend of October.

In addition, the Ferme équestre du Buisson des Caves offers the opportunity to discover farm animals, foals and donkeys.
