The Fosse Dionne is a constantly flowing Vaucluse spring. It is fed by seepage from the limestone plateaus above, as well as by the inflow of one or more rivers. Its hydrogeological network extends for more than 40 kilometres.

Cave diving in the Fosse Dionne is strictly regulated. The spring includes the Fosse Dionne washhouse, built in 1758 with a circular basin measuring 14 metres in diameter.

Culture and history

The Church of Saint-Pierre combines Italian Renaissance and Neoclassical styles in a distinctive architectural character. Its window openings are decorated with grisaille panels, of which only a few examples remain in France.

The Hôtel-Dieu de Tonnerre is considered the longest medieval hospital in Europe. It was established as a hospital in 1293 and offers an immersive visit experience with light and sound.

Waterways and paths

The port of Tonnerre on the Canal de Bourgogne is now used for recreational boating. The designated route “La Fosse Dionne & les coteaux d'Epineuil” is a circular hiking trail starting from Tonnerre. It follows the towpath along the canal, visits the Fosse Dionne, continues to the Hôtel-Dieu and returns to the railway station.
