Culture and History

In 1174, a paréage agreement formalised the foundation of Bussy under the name “Bussiacum apud Ardillos”. At the Château oppidum, wide ditches once surrounded the site; their course is still visible. Gallic coins and numerous pieces of pottery were found at the oppidum. The Gallo-Roman workshop of Montgomery comprised 24 well-preserved kilns.

A historic horse relay station called “Le Reposoir” served travellers after the six-kilometre climb from Villeneuve on the road between Courtenay and Saint-Julien-du-Sault. The choir of Saint-Pierre Church is designed in the Troyes Gothic style and dates from the late 15th century. Finds from the Gallo-Roman workshop of Montgomery can be viewed in the museum of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne.
