Saizy: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Culture and history

The Church of Saint-Denys is a rectangular building with a nave, a right-hand side aisle, a single-aisle choir and a chapel with two bays. The bell tower rises above the first bay of the side aisle.

Notre-Dame-du-Réconfort Abbey was founded in 1235 by Mahaut de Courtenay, Countess of Nevers; Pope Innocent IV consecrated its church in 1246.

The chapter house and sacristy are the only surviving parts of Notre-Dame-du-Réconfort Abbey dating from the 13th century. The surviving chapter house has six ribbed vaults resting on corbels and two central columns.

The historic Abbaye Notre-Dame-du-Réconfort site is located in the vicinity of Saizy. The surrounding area also includes the historic Abbaye bénédictine Saint-Martin de Chors site, Château de Chastellux-sur-Cure and Abbaye de Corbigny monastery complex.

Landscape and townscape

The houses and farmsteads in Saizy use locally quarried coarse-grained shelly limestone together with white limestone. The white limestone is used, among other things, for door and window surrounds, quoins and cornices, for example in the hamlet of Vaux and in Néron.

Saizy’s architecture is shaped more by livestock farming and mixed agriculture than by the former vineyards that once covered the slopes.

The wider region around Saizy is home to the Grottes d'Arcy caves and the Saut de Gouloux waterfall.
