History
The Oppidum de Vertillum is an archaeological site and an oppidum. Vertillum was the most significant Gallo-Roman town in the Châtillonnais and stood at the crossroads of ancient routes linking the Gallo-Roman cities of Sens, Langres and Autun. Vertillum was abandoned at the end of antiquity.
The layout of Vertillum resembles a Roman grid pattern. A major road, the Cardo, is complemented by perpendicular streets.
Culture
The archaeological site of Vertault is located on a plateau at an altitude of 355 metres. It has been equipped with a path and information panels for self-guided visits. The remains of Roman baths and a temple are visible at the Gallo-Roman archaeological site of Vertault. Numerous underground structures and the remains of Vertillum’s fortification walls can also be seen there.
Walking Routes
The Circuit de Beauregard crosses the Laigne, passes through Vertault and climbs up to the archaeological site of Vertillum. At the entrance to Vertillum, the Circuit de Beauregard leaves the paved road and follows a path leading down into the forest.
Church
The nave of the Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens in Vertault was built between 1782 and 1783 in the Neoclassical style. Part of the walls dates back to the 12th century. A Renaissance fresco was discovered beneath a layer of plaster in the southern transept.
The Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens also houses a polychrome limestone group depicting Saint Anthony of Padua from the second half of the 16th century. Also dating from the second half of the 16th century is a polychrome limestone statue of Saint Catherine of Alexandria with a wooden martyr’s wheel.
Museum
The Musée du Pays Châtillonnais – Trésor de Vix preserves archaeological remains excavated at Vertillum. The collection includes more than 300 tools from trades such as construction, pottery, glassmaking, shoemaking, weaving, metalworking and bone working.
