Nature
The Parc de la biodiversité covers 200 hectares and includes 13 ponds and the Loire, including 80 hectares of pond area and 10 hectares of the Loire. A 7 km-long, yellow-marked hiking trail runs through the park from the « La garenne » campsite. There is also a mountain biking circuit; both routes are open to everyone.
PR676 Le tour des Etangs is a family-friendly walk around the ponds of Bas-en-Basset, where nesting and migratory bird species can be observed. This moderately difficult circular hiking trail is 8.5 km long and has a stated duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Hiking
PR106 Le tour du Malorum is a difficult 10.2 km hike with a stated duration of 3 hours and 404 m of ascent and descent respectively. The trail leads to the foot of the Château de Rochebaron, from where the castle can be accessed.
T44 – Le chemin des crêts is considered a hike for beginners, with varied scenery around the Château de Rochebaron.
Culture and History
La Petite Galerie is an exhibition venue in a former butcher's shop, where local artists present works in techniques such as oil painting, watercolour, pastel, pottery and sculpture. Its programme includes a new temporary exhibition every four months in the entrance area of the Maison de Santé Yvonne AUBERT.
The Château de Rochebaron is a medieval castle with defensive features such as machicolations, defensive walls and loopholes. The site houses two museums and a tour with 12 information panels about the lords of Rochebaron, who lived in the castle from the 12th to the 16th century. The falconry centre at the Château de Rochebaron allows visitors to observe around 20 birds of prey in free flight from April to the end of October.
Mont Malorum is considered a Gallic oppidum and was associated with a tradition at the summer solstice on 24 June, during which the Vellavi finalised the marriages planned for the year.
On the Water
Canoe Nature Loisirs takes participants upstream by shuttle from its base in Bas-en-Basset; the car waits at the destination. By reservation, the provider rents fully equipped single and double canoes for trips on the Loire.
Three routes of 9, 14 and 22 km are available for canoe trips. Multi-day rentals are also possible.
