Saint-Jacques-des-Blats combines the high-altitude Cère Valley with volcanic landscapes, signposted trails and vibrant mountain traditions. The municipality is located in the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, at an altitude of around 1,000 metres at the upper end of the Cère Valley and in the Grand Site de France du Puy Mary. Geographical Location
Part of the Le Lioran resort is located within the municipality of Saint-Jacques-des-Blats. Bus and coach routes pass through the village all year round. The municipality is also home to the “Décollage du Plomb du Cantal” sports facility, which covers 10,000 m².
Hiking and Mountains
Saint-Jacques-des-Blats is the starting point for several hiking trails that can be used on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The signposted hike to Plomb du Cantal is 11 kilometres long, takes five hours, starts at the hamlet of Les Gardes and is classified as a difficult out-and-back route. Another signposted route, the “Les Boissines” trail, starts at Place de l'Église and leads to the summit of Puy Griou as a 15.1-kilometre, moderately difficult circular route.
The route to Plomb du Cantal reaches the 1,855-metre-high summit of the Cantal volcano. The hike also offers a viewpoint overlooking Puy Griou. The Boucle des hauts de Saint Jacques leads to the Bouguette viewpoint, which is equipped with an orientation table and offers views of Plomb du Cantal, Bec de l'Aigle and Puy Griou. The route to Arpon du Diable begins at the church square of Saint-Jacques-des-Blats.
Culture
The Saint Jacques church was restored and extended in the 19th century and is designed in the neo-Gothic style. Its vestibule houses a permanent exhibition about the village's connections with Saint-Jacques de Compostelle; it forms part of stage 4 of the Via-Arverna. The former cemetery cross of Saint-Jacques-des-Blats dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and is made of volcanic rock.
In the hamlet of Les Chazes in Saint-Jacques-des-Blats, the Musée des Chazes has exhibited works by the Dutch painter Conrad Kickert since 2016.
Regional Specialities
The Ferme du Griou in Saint-Jacques-des-Blats processes 95% of its milk production into farmhouse AOP Cantal. Other farmhouse dairy products include Tome fraîche, fromage blanc, fromage frais à tartiner, faisselles and raw milk. During tours of the Ferme du Griou, visitors are shown how Cantal is made.
Mountain Traditions
The Fête de l'Estive takes place every year at the end of May in the village of Saint-Jacques-des-Blats and is associated with driving livestock to the summer pastures. The traditional Messe des Bergers has been celebrated every year since 18 years ago at the beginning of July on the Plateau du Puy Gros at an altitude of more than 1,500 metres.
