History

The gate-tower complex consists of four square gate towers and two round towers along the defensive walls. The old washhouse was built in 1762 below the southern corner of these defensive walls.

The Church of Saint Christopher in Vianne is a simple Romanesque building. It was built in the 12th century, according to tradition by the Templars, and predates the founding of the bastide. It was extended by an annex in the 14th century and was designated a Monument historique in 1889. The church is open to visitors free of charge year-round; guided tours are available by reservation.

The old cemetery of Vianne contains early medieval graves dating from around the 9th century. The Musée du verre soufflé is considered the first French museum dedicated to blown glass and showcases glassmaking techniques as well as the skills of master glassmakers.

Water

The suspension bridge over the Baïse in Vianne was built in 1844 and is one of five suspension bridges in the Lot-et-Garonne département. The first lock in Vianne is also part of the town's history: it was built around 1600 on the orders of Sully.

After more than 50 years of inactivity, river tourism has given the lock a new lease of life and enables numerous visitors to discover the Pays d'Albret from a different perspective.

Visitors can walk along the defensive walls of the Bastide de Vianne beside the Baïse. The Circuit n°250 circular route starts at the car park on Boulevard des Remparts in Vianne.
