Nature
Around ten bat species are listed for the network of underground quarries, including six species mentioned in Annex II of the Habitats Directive. The underground quarries of Villegouge are considered to be of international importance.
Culture and History
At the Tertre de Thouil, the highest point in the municipality, the remains of a Neolithic settlement with hut sites, kitchen waste and pottery fragments were found. The Meyney and Canet areas of Villegouge also contain archaeological remains from the Gallo-Roman period.
The Saint-Pierre Church in Villegouge, built of limestone, was constructed between the 11th and 19th centuries. Its portal is classified as a French historic monument.
Wine and Events
Château Boutinet is a small family-run winery practicing organic farming. Throughout the year, visits and wine tastings are offered at Château Boutinet by prior arrangement. Walks and Rando-Tapas are also offered there as visitor experiences.
At the Rando-Tapas event, a fun and educational walk takes you through the vineyards for 1 hour and 15 minutes. The methods of soil cultivation are presented, followed by a tasting of three Boutinet wines with homemade tapas. The Ronde des Vignobles en Fronsadais is a hiking event held annually on the second weekend of June.
