Culture and history
A church has been documented at the site of the Église Saint-Pierre since the 11th century. The Église Saint-Pierre was listed in its entirety as a historic monument by decree of 16 April 2002. The western portal, dating from the same period, has four archivolts; five round arches rest on paired columns.
The old market hall of Ambarès-et-Lagrave is a rare example of a hall built on a colonnade. The Château de Peychaud is also part of the historic heritage: it was built by the Marquis de Fayet, and numerous irrigation and drainage channels on the estate are still present. The façades and roofs of the Château de Peychaud have been listed as historic monuments since 15 March 1966.
The Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Grave was formerly a Templar commandery; its oldest section dates from the 12th century. It was deconsecrated in 1784 and continues to serve today as agricultural outbuildings and wine cellars.
The Chapelle Saint-Denis was built around 1875 on the site of the former Chapelle Saint-Denis du Terray d’Aillabau, which had fallen into disrepair at the end of the 18th century. It is a neo-Gothic building with a Latin-cross floor plan and has stained-glass windows installed in 1877. It continues to be used for Catholic worship.
The Pôle Culturel Evasion regularly hosts artist residencies; it also provides opportunities for meetings, cultural awareness and outreach activities. The Scènes Croisées event series was held in Ambarès-et-Lagrave for the 22nd time and offered four contemporary music groups from Gironde a festive, convivial evening.
