The Château de Saint-Ulrich is the most imposing and best-preserved of the three castles overlooking Ribeauvillé. The Château du Haut-Ribeaupierre is the oldest castle of the Ribeaupierre family; its existence has been documented since 1084. Its imposing round keep offers views over the Alsatian plain and the surrounding ridges.
Culture and History
The Château du Girsberg also bears distinctive architectural traces: it has a pentagonal keep as well as Romanesque, Gothic and possibly Renaissance elements. In medieval architecture, it is considered an outstanding achievement of the 13th century.
The Église Saint-Grégoire dates from the 13th century and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1994. It is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; access is through the side door. The Tour des Bouchers is the only fortification tower currently still preserved between the Ville Moyenne and the Vieille Ville of Ribeauvillé. The Tour des Cigognes dates from the 14th century; its roofs bear stork nests, which are now often occupied.
Winegrowing
The three Grands Crus Geisberg, Kirchberg and Osterberg are cultivated in Ribeauvillé. The Grands Crus of Ribeauvillé comprise the four grape varieties Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat d’Alsace.
The Musée de la Vigne et de la Viticulture at the Cave de Ribeauvillé presents topics related to winegrowing, including grafting grapevines, the grape harvest, pressing and winemaking. The museum is open to visitors for several months each year.
Trails and Sightseeing
The Three Castles Trail has a steep ascent right at the beginning and takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes. In addition, the “Ribeauvillé” mobile app offers a section for a guided tour as well as a complete tour of the town supplemented with photos.
