Trails and Water

The Circuit de la petite digue is an easy 1.2 km walking trail leading into the Rhine floodplains. The Circuit du Rhin follows a 1 km walking trail to the Rhine, where boats pass by.

The Circuit Ulrich Von Schoenau is a quiet 2 km walking trail along the river, through gardens and the historic village, and past the motte. The Circuit la jungle rhénane is a 5.4 km route through riparian forest with hydraulic installations dating from the 19th century.

The Circuit Rheinmark is a 3.2 km route along the Tulla dyke, with Rheinmark boundary stones, a former branch of the Rhine and views of the Vosges. The well-preserved dyke in Schœnau allows travel along an elevated route and offers views of the Vosges as well as access to the former branches of the Rhine.

Culture and History

The Schœnau motte is one of the last surviving remnants of Schœnau's medieval castle. It has a diameter of around 50 metres and is approximately 10 metres high. The Schœnau motte is considered one of the best-preserved motte-and-bailey castles in Alsace.

The canalised Rhine runs along the entire municipal area of Schœnau and is navigated by cargo barges and cruise ships. The Rhine forest of Schœnau is protected by the Natura 2000 network. More than 500 different plant species grow in the Rhine forest of Schœnau.

The former branches of the Rhine near Schœnau are former river channels from the period before the canalisation and natural refuges.
