History
An important memorial site is the Musée Mémorial de la Ligne Maginot du Rhin, which has been housed in Casemate 35/3 since 1971. The museum displays a collection of objects connected with the fighting in June 1940. Casemate 35/3 was Marckolsheim’s most important defensive position and bears the traces of the German offensive of June 1940. It has two firing chambers and was intended to protect an important crossing over the Rhine. Guided tours for groups are offered at the Musée Mémorial de la Ligne Maginot du Rhin by prior arrangement.
Nature
The “Sur les pas du loup” discovery trail passes traditional houses and houses built after the war, 19th-century buildings, and the Cité Paysanne district. It also follows the town moat, a remnant of the medieval fortifications. The trail takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The Cité Paysanne was built from 1941 onwards by the German government according to three residential models: small workers’ houses, medium-sized farmsteads for farmers, and large hereditary farms. It is a remarkable example of the reconstruction programme of the so-called “Ordre Nouveau” communities. As a whole, the Cité Paysanne is listed as a “Monument historique”. This includes fourteen model farms, comprising ten agricultural farms and four blockhouses, as well as the associated urban-planning and landscape features. The listing was made by decree dated 24 October 2012.
Culture
The more recent architectural history includes the former synagogue on Rue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, built in 1961, and the former cantonal court in Marckolsheim, built in 1864.
Today’s Church of St George in Marckolsheim was built from 1961 onwards and consecrated on 7 June 1965. Inside is a Romanesque sandstone baptismal font from the 12th century.
The Chapelle de Mauchenheim is the only surviving trace of the village of Mauchenheim. Above its entrance is a reconstruction of 13th-century frescoes depicting part of Genesis.
Geographical Setting
The Marckolsheim locks can be viewed from a freely accessible observation bridge, where visitors can watch ships passing through the locks.
For cyclists, the “Euro Vélo 15 entre Terre et Eau” cycle route runs from Marckolsheim to Kunheim. The 29-kilometre route takes approximately 3 hours and is suitable for everyone. It follows EuroVelo 15 and the Tulla Route, as well as passing through villages in the Ried region with their cultural heritage. The route offers varied landscapes and impressions of cultural heritage, nature, and tranquillity.
