Culture and history
The Église Saint-Arbogast in Batzendorf is a Neoclassical church with an onion dome, dedicated to Saint Arbogast. It was built in 1781 after the Batzendorf parish separated from the parish of Berstheim, whose filial church it had previously been. The building was constructed according to plans by the architect Nicolas Alexandre Salins de Montfort. The church contains a painting depicting Saint Arbogast healing the son of King Dagobert. The organ case was made by Michel Stiehr in 1840; the instrument was reconstructed by Edmond-Alexandre Roethinger in 1926.
The Corps de Garde and the presbytery at 1 rue de l’Eglise in Batzendorf feature construction campaigns dating from 1866 and 1869.
Littelsheim was located southeast of Batzendorf. This abandoned settlement had probably already ceased to be inhabited by the 17th century. A chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas that remained there was still mentioned in 1758 and may have disappeared during or after the French Revolution.
Aviation and events
During the warmer months, Batzendorf Ultra-Légers offers discovery flights to the public, allowing visitors to explore the region from the air. Every September, the Batzendorf Ultra-Légers club traditionally organises the Fête de l’Air, which attracts a large and loyal audience.
Agriculture and landscape
Batzendorf is home to around ten farms that grow or produce, among other things, hops, raspberries, oyster mushrooms and asparagus.
There are two gravel pits in the municipality of Batzendorf. One of them extracts sands of varying composition, including quartz, clay, gravel and topsoil.
