Nagu: Archipelago, Culture and Island Trails
Accommodation in Nagu
Two main islands and 3,000 smaller islands and skerries define Nagu. Its lush landscape is part of the inner archipelago; at the same time, trails, church art and the Maritime House tell the story of the area. When choosing a holiday apartment in Nagu, you can consider whether your trip should focus primarily on nature and activity, family experiences, or culture and seafaring.
Discover the Archipelago Landscape and Trails
If you enjoy walking, Nagu has numerous hiking trails. There are also plenty of cycling routes. The options range from named nature trails to routes that combine nature and cultural themes. Jatulintarha is one of the named nature trails; the Westerholm Cultural Trail is among the nature and culture routes. These different options give you ways to tailor active days to the interests of your travel group.
The Westerholm Trail runs across Ernholm and introduces the island’s historic sights through text and images. It is dedicated to the artist and landscape painter Victor Westerholm and leads to Jitukastberget Hill and an Iron Age burial mound. The trail thus combines insights into the island’s history with a specific cultural heritage destination. If you are particularly interested in art, landscape painting or traces of earlier human settlement, it offers a fitting thematic focus.
Another way to get to know the archipelago is the Archipelago Story Trail: this video-guided tour follows the Archipelago Trail. Archipelago guide Magnus Sundman shares stories and the history of the region. Along the Story Trail are 21 signs with QR codes, which you can use to open the guide on your own mobile phone. For trip planning, this offers a different approach from the Westerholm Trail: here, the focus is on stories about the region, while the Westerholm Trail features historic sights on Ernholm.
Church and Maritime History
Nagu Church brings together several remarkable historical features. Its oldest parts date from the 1440s. The church also houses Finland’s oldest Finnish-language Bible, from 1642. In addition, it has unique Schwan organs from 1791. These dates refer to different parts of the church’s history and make a visit particularly interesting for travellers who appreciate architectural history, religious art and historic books.
Nagu’s maritime past is also a subject in its own right. During the sailing-ship era, Nagu was Finland’s most important maritime parish. The Maritime House tells the story of seafaring, from the sailing ships built here to modern cargo ships. One room is dedicated to the life and work of ship model maker Sandvall and displays miniature ships and boats. The exhibits thus span the development of shipping and the detailed craft of model making.
Family Experiences and Activities on the Water
The Nauvo-Auvo Trail starts at Nagu Guest Harbour, is about 1 km long and is close to Framnäs Beach. It is intended especially for the youngest members of the family. Its approximate length gives you a concrete point of reference when including activities for children in your trip. For more activity on the water, Nagu Kayak & Sup Rental rents kayaks and SUP boards at Nagu’s North Harbour. Yoga and frisbee golf are also available in Nagu.
Getting There and Choosing a Base
Nagu is the departure harbour for connections to several popular islands. The ferry crossing between Nagu and Pargas takes ten minutes and is free of charge. When choosing your holiday apartment, it may therefore be important to decide whether Nagu itself or connections to other islands will be the main focus of your trip. An accessible vessel and accessible passenger services operate on Nagu’s southern route. The ms Falkö is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet. By contrast, a partially accessible small boat is used on the Nagu cross-route.
Local Food Culture
Early potatoes and fish products are part of Nagu’s food culture. Since 2025, Nagu Distillery has been located in a new visitor centre in the town centre. In addition to a distillery tour, a special tasting experience is offered there. Together, these examples offer different insights into local products and today’s visitor culture. You can plan your trip around an interest in regional food culture, maritime history, trails or island connections, without any one subject defining Nagu’s character in full.
